Ø Yichun City/China, 16.8.2010: At least 20 dead, more than 150 injured and four missing after fireworks factory blast! [à The awful explosion remembers two other very-deadly explosions: On May 13, 2000, 23 people were killed and nearly 950 others were injured when a massive fireworks explosion devastated a neighborhood in the Dutch city of Enschede. And on February 1, 2008, 22 people were killed and more than 100 others were injured when an unlicensed fireworks factory exploded in the Turkish capital of Istanbul.] more...
Ø India. They stay in the dark during powercuts, not even lighting the customary lamp in the prayer room. Around 7,000 families in the town of Arupukottai in south-west Tamil Nadu prefer the darkness because their cramped houses have turned into illegal manufacturing units for fuse wires used in firecrackers. ... Memories of the explosion last week which killed eight officials who were in the middle of raiding an illegal fireworks factory in nearby Sivakasi, have fadet. ...There are clear health hazards to the work, says district fire officer A Karunakaran. "A person standing close to a smoking fuse inhales a large quantity of carbon dioxide and sulphur. When he rushes out for breath, the sulphur in his lungs reacts with the oxygen in the air and produces sulphur dioxide which can cause severe or sometimes irreparable lung damage," he says. But given their dependence on it for a ling, community memebers are unconcerned about health problems. Ø America. After the huge Pyrotechnics Guild Convention's nightly fireworks shows at the Wisconsin International Raceway, complaints from nearby residents could impact future fireworks shows. More homes and businesses have gone up near WIR since the last convention in 2004. That resulted in several hundred complaints to community leaders about the noise and length of the shows. Other complaints concerned fireworks shock waves that some homeowners blame for cracked plaster. Ø "Effect of fireworks events on urban background trace metal aerosol concentrations: is the cocktail worth the show?" by Moreno T, Querol X, Alastuey A, Amato F et al. Journal of Hazardous Materials (2010), doi: 10.1016/j.jhazmat.2010.07.082. Available online 26 July 2010: We report on the effect of a major firework event on urban background atmospheric PM2.5 chemistry, using 24-hour data collected over eight weeks at two sites in Girona, Spain. ... Marked increases in these elements were also measured outside the park as the pollution cloud drifted over the city centre, and levels of some metals remained elevated above background for days after the event as a reservoir of metalliferous dust persisted within the urban area. Transient high-PM pollution episodes are a proven health hazard, made worse in the case of firework combustion because many of the elements released are both toxic and finely respirable, and because displays commonly take place in an already polluted urban atmosphere. ... The inhalation of smoke loaded with metalliferous particles small enough to enter the lung alveoli causes negative health effects in humans, especially among vulnerable individuals such as asthmatics. ... Discussion and conclusions: ... Despite the lack of legal controls on PM emissions emanating from firework combustion, the severity of the impact of such events on urban background atmospheric chemistry provides reasonable cause for concern. There is already abundant published evidence that short-lived fluctuations in pollutants can induce changes in both lung and heart function. Asthma symptoms, perhaps the most obvious risk factor, have been linked to one-hour PM10 and NO2 concentrations rising from background values of 20-30 µg m-3 to brief peaks at 40-70 µg m-3. 1-hour exposure to elevated traffic levels has been associated with the onset of myocardial infarction, and hourly increases in PM2.5 linked to myocardial ischaemia. In the specific case of fireworks emissions it is the metalliferous component of atmospheric aerosols which is additionally implicated in negative health effects, not only with acute responses but also in their possible contribution to long term degenerative conditions such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Presumably, those most immediately at risk from exposure to dense smoke clouds are people already debilitated by pre-existing illness, notably severe asthma or coronary heart disease, but the metalliferous and highly respirable nature of fireworks emissions makes them per se hazardous to the general population. ... Furthermore, our observation of a continued "reservoir effect" enhancement of ambient metal PM levels persisting for days after the fireworks event indicates that the effect on urban background PM is less transient than might be supposed.
Ø "Emission factors and exposures from ground-level pyrotechnics" by Croteau G et al. Atmospheric Environment. 2010;44:3295-3303. Available online 1 June 2010. This study shows that ground-level pyrotechnics generate airbore contaminants at levels, which could be a health hazard. Individuals proximal to the pyrotechnics are especially at risk SO2 exposure exceeded the threshold for bronchoconstriction in asthmatics based on personal air monitoring at two performances utilizing consumer pyrotechnics. ... These results indicate a need for exposure monitoring when performers, technicians and other workers are exposed to airborne contaminants from pyrotechnics. …

Ø Alton, Ill./America. Police are turning to videotapes in hopes of identifying and charging people in a crowd who they say fired bottle rockets and other fireworks at emergency responders. Police Chief David Hayes calls the attacks Sunday night and early Monday (4.+5.7.2010) near a housing complex "despicable", uncivilized and stomach-turning. Hayes says firefighters and police were attacked three different times, beginning with firefighters pelted with fireworks when they were trying to douse a trash fire. Ø The Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department has issued a health advisory for people with heart disease, asthma or other respiratory conditions such as COPD because of smoke in the air over the weekend from fireworks. In recent years, the Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department has found high levels of particle pollution from the night of July 3 through the early morning hours of July 5, resulting in an air quality index level of "unhealthy for sensitive groups". ... Exposure even for a few hours can aggravate lung disease, cause asthma attacks and acute bronchitis, and may increase the chance of respiratory infection. In people with heart disease, short term exposures to high levels of particle pollution have been linked to angina, heart attacks and arrhythmia. ... Ø Are fireworks really the right way to celebrate the Fourth of July? How well do we like those beautiful brilliant colours that are shot up into the air every Fourth of July? Do we like them enough to poison ourselves and our nation? These exploding lights are more dangerous than people realize. Not only do they pollute the environment, they pollute our bodies. Pyrotechnics are very toxic due to the amount of chemicals and heavy metals used in them. Fireworks can cause a number of health problems for humans. ... environmentalists and public safety advocates believe that there are better ways to celebrate our freedom and accomplishments other than the use of fireworks. They say the more ideal alternative would be to eliminate pyrotechnics altogether and use less harmful things. ... Fireworks - do we need them, or should we move forward and find a less harmful way to celebrate? The fact is the beautiful lights are very toxic and in the long run could cause either slowed development of certain organs or even death. They also contaminate our water supply and create litter on the ground. This can't be what we want for our country or the world. Ø Throughout the Islands during cultural celebrations, thousands of pets are effected, as well as our infirm kupuna, young children and sleeping babies, sensitive war veterans, and people who suffer with asthma and breathing difficulties. Added to this is the unknown effects of poisonous, particle laden, smoke filled air on Hawai'i's 300 plus endangered birds and animals. Where should the line be drawn between those who wish to celebrate cultural traditions by detonating deafening explosives, and those who simply desire peace and quiet, fresh air to breathe, and a safe environment for their children and property? Should a dog - or any pet - have to be put down because of raucous celebrations? Ø Although the smoke may have cleared, the noxious chemicals released by the hundreds of fireworks shows that took place over the July 4th weekend still linger in America's cities and waterways. Toxins like cadmium, barium, arsenic and perchlorates that are released into the atmosphere when the fireworks are set off can remain in the soil and water supply for years, causing irreparable damage to local ecosystems and human health. (Source: "Fireworks remain long after the Fourth" by Travis Kaya, 2009/2010, http://www.takepart.com/news/2009/07/07/itotd-fireworks-remain-long-after-the-fourth)
Ø The traditional Fourth fo July fireworks could prove to be detrimental to a healthy thyroid and to the planet. Fireworks contain the ingredient potassium perchlorate that has been linked to thyroid problems. Both rocket fuel and fireworks produce potassium perchlorate, which has been shown to contaminate water supplies as well as to infiltrate the food chain. Chemicals that are released from fireworks include cadmium, barium, rubidium, strontium, aluminium, dioxins as well as perchlorates. most of these chemicals are toxic; some are radioactive and known carcinogens. These toxins end up in the water or soil, where they continue to cause hazard to animals and humans for many years. ... At this time, no one knows the health risks associated with fireworks and most assume that the toxic chemicals are incinerated in the air. As many fireworks are made in China, where use of lead in manufacturing has been found, care needs to be exercised when exposing oneself or one's children to fireworks. Ø Madison, Wis./America. Fireworks and how they might be affecting the environment and the health ofresidents is the subject of a new debate in Madison. The Madison Environmental Justice Organization is asking a city committee to look into whether fireworks are snding chemicals into the soil and water in city parks, particularly Warner Park where the annual Rhythm & Booms celebration is held. The City Committee on the Environment voted on May 17, 2010, to ask the city and county's health department staff to look into the issue, and report back in June whether they think Warner Park should be tested before and after the fireworks display. ... Rhythm & Booms organizer Terry Kelly also said right now, the fireworks company has informed him there's no alternative to the chemicals. His organization will redouble efforts to clean up debris in the park after the fireworks display, and will continue discussing the issue with the fireworks company. There
are of course larger sources of fine dust than that generated by fireworks, but
there is
A
rise of the PM10-concentration (fine dust) in the air by 10 µg/m3 only (ten micro gram per

Can
we accept that the amount of fine dust remains on the increase because of
fireworks?
The
governments show no sign of action – it is up to you, therefore, to act!
Join
now in solidarity in favour of all those who primarily suffer a health loss by
firework
emissions, from high short-term fine dust loads respectively,

like unborn babies and newborn, as well as infants
-
people with respiratory diseases (asthma, COPD/Chronic Obstructive
Pulmonary Disease, pulmonary
emphysema, lung cancer etc.) and cardiovascular diseases
- people with Persistent Hyperreactivity (multiple chemical sensitivity, TILT/Toxicant-Induced Loss of Tolerance, CFS/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia etc.) and Low-Dose RADS/Reactive Airways Dysfunction Syndrome as well as the
