SkyNews. Fireworks: Your views. Here two emails of many: <<I don't put myself down as a killjoy but the fireworks this year are beyond a joke. The only solution as far as I can see is to ban the open sale of fireworks and only have organised events. Alan Davies, Cheshire>> / <<It is absolutely disgusting that we are effectively allowing children and also some irresponsible adults to purchase what is effectively a weapon. Should fireworks be banned? Should the general public be allowed to play with such dangerous substances or should fireworks be restricted to public pyrotechnics displays – or even outlawed altogether? Are fireworks to dangerous? (17.10.2002 ) Do you think that fireworks are too dangerous for kids to use, or is the government over-reacting? Do you think fireworks should only be used at organised displays and be banned for sale in shops? <<I like fireworks at home like any kid, but if banning them means kids don't get hurt, I'm all for it. People haven't listened to numerous warnings before, they're not going to start now. Anchal, 15, Bexleyheath>> / << Do you know how many people get injured or killed on bonfire night? It's ignorance and lack of saftety skills that's hurting them. If fireworks have to happen then they should be arranged and presented by professionals not children. A personality test should be given to those wishing to purchase them so we don't have people who think its funny to tie lit  fireworks to cats/dogs tails getting hold of them! Catherine, 16, Barnsley>> Read the kids comments on fireworks under: http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/chat/your_comments/newsid_2330000/2330149.stm

<<It is time we stopped playing with explosives. Only allow professionals to handle them. Ban the retail sales of explosives/fireworks. Peter from Newcastle>> / <<…The users of fireworks use them for any and all occasions at all times of day and night up to and after midnight with little regard for others in the vicinity. How then can arrangements be made for pets?… John from Halifax>>

Banning fireworks: your comments (November 2002): <<It seems a little strange that we consider it too dangerous to allow roperly vetted and licensed adults to have hand guns yet anyone can walk into a corner shop and buy explosives. Ban fireworks! - <<Just back from St George's A&E being treated for burns to my right shoulder and neck after some child threw a firework into the pub which bounced off the floor and down my coat. Posted by Gert at November 8, 2003>> - The following is a part from one of the answering e-mails to Gert: <<…Then we have the curfew no fireworks between 11pm to 7am, how and how is going to enforce this? This still leaves 16 hours of the day that we can legally be bombarded with fireworks. They are still saying that the public will be able to buy fireworks throughout the year for weddings, birthdays etc, but they keep saying that they are going to limit the sale of fireworks to three weeks before Nov 5th and a few days after and again for new years eve, how is this possible if they are going to allow you to buy fireworks all year round to celebrate every other occasion. We have to keep the pressure on the Government to make sure that they do change the firework laws and that these changes protect us, our animals and our property, not just their revenue and the firework industry's profits… Teresa Kulkarni, 2.12.2003>> This and more e-mails you can find under http://www.madmusingsof.me.uk/archives/007007.php

"Is it time to put the fireworks out?" - We have to put up with the noise of fireworks going off for weeks before and after the big day. Is it time they were banned, or is there another solution? (November 2003) <<Fireworks should be banned to the public… Who gives people the right to interfere with my quality of life. No one asked my permission if they could set of these annoying things that disturb the peace, frighten wildlife and pollute the environment… Mike Reeves from Trowbridge>> / <<Do you feel helpless as the fireworks decends on your locality, invalids your house, destroys your quality of life and terrifies your pets? There is a way to get your voice heard. Fireworks should be banned. Deroland Smith from Manchester.>> Find this and other statements under: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/allnews/content_objectid=13591150_method=full_siteid=50143_headline=-IS-IT-TIME-TO-PUT-THE-FIREWORKS-OUT--name_page.html

"Are fireworks too dangerous?" - Have you had a bad experience with fireworks? Do you think the new laws will help? Read here your comments… (November 2003): <<Fireworks are out of control and cause massive heartache for many. I no longer walk my dog in the evenings at this time of the year due to very loud bangers. It terrifies him and leaves me unable to be certain of controlling him. It must have the same affect on all the wildlife as I live near a wooded area. Somehow we live in a country of abuse to society, our natural environment and wildlife. T. Newman, Bournemouth, UK>> You can find this statement and many others under http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/3242901.stm

Have your say: Fireworks, is a ban right? (15.10.2002):

A new campaign launched by the consumer minister will target the black market in fireworks, encourage local councils to use their powers to tackle the problem of noise and nuisance caused by fireworks and also impose on-the-spot fines for irresponsible fireworks users. - But what do you think about the new plans? Do they put a damper on firework fun? Or do you think we need to have stricter rules on the selling of fireworks?

<<Fireworks are a menace to society. I'm sick to death of fireworks being set off at all hours of the day and night...Vicky, Stockport>> / <<If fireworks were made quieter, NO whistles/No bangs/No crackles/NO screeches/NO hummers, I think that would be an acceptable compromise as they wouldn't have that shock value that so many idiotic children and teenagers crave so much...Anthony, Accrington, Lancashire>> / <<...Why are these canons and excessively loud explosives on sale anyway? What is the Government doing about it? Its like living in a war zone...Mary Cheney, Tunbridge Wells, Kent>> You can read these ones and many other letters under http://www.bbc.co.uk/manchester/have_your_say/2002/10/15/fireworks.shtml

Devon message boards: Is it time we banned the sale of fireworks? Remember, remember the 56h of November… Some people will remember Guy Fawkes Night because they have the scars to remind them. Is it time to restrict the sale of fireworks to organised public displays only? You can read here your opinions. Read the discussion under http://www.bbc.co.uk/devon/have_your_say/fireworks.shtml

Portland independent media center, discussion about fireworks, June 2004: <<Fireworks stink, find some other way to celebrate. The smoke made by fireworks is densely sulphurous, highly acidic and contains a lot of greenhouse gases. Fireworks dump a lot of toxic metals like lead, arsenic and mercury into the atmosphere. Fireworks poison the environment in a way that is incidious and totally unnecessary... John>> http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2004/06/291592.shtml#129834

Local Opinion: "Treat fireworks as they are: Dangerous and illegal", 10.7.2005, http://www.etruth.com/News/Content.aspx?ID=352080&page=: <<It's the Fourth of July again and, like always, law-abiding citizens are being assaulted by the setting off of legal and illegal fireworks al hours of the day and night. They do this oblivious of both the discomfort and danger they are creating for their neighbors. On July 2, my family suffered through hours of unrelenting noise and acrid smoke. …>>

<<Cite the fireworks fools: Bakersfield is lucky no one died this Fourth of July. But firefighters received 358 fireworks-related calls, someone threw a firework and hit a firefighter in the eye with it, and fires burned houses, trees and vegetation all over town. … J. Baldwin, 6.7.2005 followed by a lot of comments…

<<Animal Torture Night. We have survived another Guy Fawkes weekend. … Better to rename bonfire night as what it now is for wild, domestic and pet animals and call it National Animal Torture Night with the slogan "Don't be a killjoy, kill an animal". Those setting off fireworks might begin to understand what their enjoyment means to others.>> George Walker, 8.11.2005, http://www.theherald.co.uk/features/50365.html

I just received a request for a donation from the Amherst Leisure Services for this year's fireworks event. Let me tell you why I am against fireworks. ("What's wrong with fireworks", http://www.animalliberationfront.com/Practical/Shop--ToDo/Activism/Fireworks.htm)

<<The time has come that we, as patriotic Americans, must take the lead when it comes to reducing global warming. We must act locally and think globally. We can take the lead in a significant campaign to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and other atmospheric pollutants. What I am proposing will undoubtedly reduce the magnitude of global warming considerably. We must eliminate all fireworks on the Fourth of July. …>> Joe Sobel ("Your Letters: Ban holiday fireworks", 15.7.2006, http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/news/opinion/15034755.htm)

<<Primitive people used fire, beating drums and wild dancing to get themselves excited before going to war. Noise and bright lights stimulated the emotions, not the intellect. … Civilized people modified the rituals somewhat, but held onto the custom of noise and fire in form of gunpowder. … Every year, Earth Day is celebrated all around the world, and we are reminded all the kinds of pollution: noise, air, water, etc. Why aren't fireworks set off that day? It would be very hypocritical, since fireworks produce noise and air pollution. …>> Paul Gromosiak ("Guestview: Fireworks – an Archaic Way to Celebrate", 19.7.2006, http://www.niagara-gazette.com/opinion/local_story_200170548.html?keyword=secondarystory)

<<We are heading for another Guy Fawkes soon. Maybe we need to consider renaming it National Animal Torture Night with the slogan 'Don't be a killjoy, ill an animal', as this is what firework celebrations mean for wild and domestic animals...>> Toni Brockhoven, Durban/South Africa ("Find another way to celebrate Guy Fawkes", 18.10.2006, http://www.dailynews.co.za/index.php?fArticleId=3491015

<<HAPPY DIWALI WITHOUT CRACKERS 2006: Deep (light) avail (rows), a row of light that taught us to vanquish ignorance that subdues humanity and to drive away darkness that engulfs the light of knowledge. - But Diwali today means: More 'air, noise, water, land & social' pollution due to use of lots of firecrackers. More patients for hospitals during & after the festival, more darkness rather than light. Really bad news if there's no wind and rain to lessen the effects of the smoke. Highly polluting nature of these firecrackers lead to a plethora of diseases...>> -  Please click here to read the whole letter of Mr K.S. <<HAPPY DIWALI WITHOUT CRACKERS 2008: Diwali is a festival of lights that depicts to drive away darkness that engulfs the light of knowledge, towards a bright future. During this festival (3 to 5 days), it has become a custom to enjoy Diwali through "Lighting Lamps", "Exchanging Sweets & Gifts" & "BURSTING FIRE CRACKERS". Diwali today means: More 'air, nose, water, land & social' pollution due to use of lots of firecrackers. More patients for hospitals during & after the festival. ...Celebrating Guy Fawkes makes as much sense as legalising Class A drugs to commemorate the Opium Wars. How many more homes need to be burned to the ground, animals maimed and killed, people injured, and property destroyed before common sense will prevail and we once and for all ban the things outright. ...
