Caryville, Campbell County. Thunder Mountain Fireworks was destroyed in a blaze around 2.30 a.m., but no one was injured, despite the fact the building was filled with explosives. The fire was contained to that building.

About 50 firefighters from six fire departments battled the flames – and fireworks – until about 5.30 a.m. When they arrived, flames were shooting through the roof and fireworks were shooting everywhere. Concern about the fireworks, thickening smoke and the potential for explosions prompted authorities to close the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 for about 20 minutes. Officials also evacuated a nearby motel and an apartment building. Those people were allowed to return to their beds after about an hour.

The metal building that housed the fireworks business is a total loss.

It may be Wednesday (1.6.) before it is safe for fire investigators to try to determine what sparked the fire. 31.5.2011

Long Island, New York. Eric Smith (36) was hosting a party at his home when his arm was blown off while he was setting off illegal fireworks for his friends and family. He was rushed to hospital in an ambulance with his severed arm packed on ice. Doctors could not reattach the limb as they said it suffered too much damage in the fireworks blast. Smith's arm was detached at the shoulder. It was a mortar bomb firework that exploded out of a three foot metal launching pipe, that ripped off Smith's left arm at the shoulder. Neighbors said the blast shook houses and set off car alarms. When Smith lit the skyrocket off, he failed to get out of the way quickly enough. – The man was illegally using a commercial fireworks device – which explodes at a much greater force than a firecracker, said a Suffolk County Police Lt. 3.7.2010

Mountain Home. An explosion at about 1.20 p.m. injured three volunteer firefighters at the Desert Canyon Golf Course, when firefighters were preparing for the annual display.

Mountain Home Fire Chief Phil Gridley said a shell exploded in a volunteer firefighter's hands because of static electricity caused by the two shirts he was wearing and exacerbated by humidity above 35 percent. The man suffered burns to the upper half of his body. Two other firefighters nearby were injured. The explosion apparently ignited sagebrush, surrounding the course. Once the initial shell went off – it caused a chain reaction which set off 75% of the fireworks. Firefighters, who were already on scene preparing for the fireworks show, were able to put the fires out. The blaze destroyed about $30,000 worth of pyrotechnics. The fireworks display planned for July 4th has been cancelled. The incident is under investigation. 3.7.2010

Park Place. Fire investigators with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue have concluded that a blaze that swept through Park Place Assisted Living Community, 8665 S.W. Hemlock St., on Independence Day was started by falling debris from nearby fireworks. When firework debris landed on the building's roof, investigators said, it most likely ignited dryer lint that had accumulated under an exhaust fan, which then spread from the roof to the attic.

The senior living center's sprinkler system was the reason that the fire didn't spread farther into the building, giving employees and 80 residents – many of whom use wheelchairs and walkers – the time they needed in order to evacuate. 4.7.2010

Laguna. Improperly disposed "safe and sane" fireworks possibly led to the destruction of two houses on the 9000 block of Lake Way in the early morning. Damages: about $700,000. – Fire investigators believe that legal fireworks most likely started the fire after a fireworks party was held in the neighborhood. A few adults were put in charge of extinguishing and disposing the used fireworks after the party. Fire staff believes that one or more fireworks might have been left smoldering when they were placed in a 60-gallon trash that sat outside the southern house's fence. The fire then grew from the trashcan and spread up to the southern house's garage attic and later reached a plastic storage shed that contained a lawnmower. 5.7.2010

Boston. Four men in their 20s live in apartments at 31 Norfolk Ave., and they were on the roof of their building Saturday night (21.8.2010), shooting off fireworks. Some of the burning missiles landed in Roxbury on 57 Norfolk Ave., sparking the fire. The resulting blaze, one of the largest in recent Boston history, gutted the complex, which included an abandoned cold storage facility and an adjacent eight-story tower. The warehouse complex, which stretches across a city block, was ordered demolished by the city. A giant fireball rose more than 100 feet in the air, and the plume of smoke could be seen from miles away. Firefighters poured water on the site for nearly 18 hours before declaring the fire "all out" about 4.15 p.m. on Sunday (22.8.2010). At its peak, about 170 firefighters battled the fire. Fourteen cities and towns sent fire trucks to cover the empty firehouses all around the city. Damage: $750,000. 21.8.2010

Michigan City, Ind. A Waste Management garbage truck was emptying a dumpster at the Normandy Village Apartments when an explosion happened. Waste Management instructed the driver to bring the truck to its garage in Kingsbury for inspection. While workers were unloading the contents, a second, much larger explosion occurred. The percussion from it damaged the building pretty severely. Fortunately no one was injured. As a precaution, Michigan City police evacuated two buildings at Normandy Village. Federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were called to investigate. Investigators determined the cause of the explosion was illegal fireworks in the dumpster. While the dumpster was being emptied into the truck some concrete, also in the dumpster, crashed together causing the gunpowder to ignite. 27.9.2010
