Wallerawang, New South Wales. A large explosion has ripped through a fireworks factory. 10 homes have been evacuated in a one-kilometre exclusion zone around the Howard and Sons Pyrotechnics factory. Efforts to extinguish the blaze were being hampered by continuing explosions at the factory. Emergency service crews could not enter the hazardous factory grounds for some time. Witnesses watched helplessly as the factory was hit by a series of explosions over a 90-minute period. The massive explosion destroyed 20 and damaged 30 of all 50 buildings on the 154-hectare property, with metal debris blowing the windows and doors of eight homes up to one kilometre from the factory and the blast was heard over 30 km away.

The blast has left a three-metre crater in the ground where a steel shipping container once stood and where investigators believe the seat of the explosion was, or one of the explosions.

No employees were at the factory when the blast happened but police suspect a thief broke in and was killed in an explosion he inadvertently let off when raiding a firework storeroom. Investigators three days later say they don't believe anyone was killed at the site. Forensic officers have collected fragments found up to several hundred metres away from the explosion site in their attempt to find the cause of the blast.

Wallerawang.

As many as five explosions rocked the area around the Cardile fireworks storage plant shortly before 9.00 a.m. shattering the windows of houses on nearby properties and bringing down the ceilings of at least one. They were followed for the next two hours by a constant volley of exploding fireworks which caused a series of spot fires in nearby bushland and sent shrapnel flying 500 metres away.

"No return for residents after Perth fireworks explosion", 6.3.2002, http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200203/s498132.htm: Residents inside a 500 metre exclusion zone of a massive explosion and fire at a fireworks warehouse in the Perth Hills will not be allowed to return to their homes tonight. The decision has also been made not to allow ground crews into the site, where two containers filled with 300 kilograms of fireworks are threatened by flames.

Officials say the fireworks were being stored correctly. Government inspector Mark Comber said the explosion was caused by a handling accident.

"Government indifference as a second toxic blaze threatens West Australian residents", 19.4.2002: http://www.wsws.org/articles/2002/apr2002/waus-a19.shtml: Shrapnel was scattered over houses up to 600 metres from the site, shattering windows and damaging roofs. Residents were evacuated from many homes within a kilometre radius. The blaze was so intense that explosives experts declared the site "too volatile" for emergency services to enter for several hours. Residents were shocked to learn that they lived only a few hundred metres from a site that had been licensed to store up to 12 tonnes of fireworks. The Department of Minerals and Energy (DME), which oversees the regulation and licensing of such sites, had renewed the plant's licence last year without even visiting the Cardile factory. DME had also approved an increase in the tonnage of fireworksl permitted on the site, without informing local authorities.
