Shiqiaotou Village, Janbu Township of Puning City, Guangdong Province/South China. Friday evening, February 26, 2010, millionaire Yang Junshu who staged a lavish but illegal fireworks show and his nephew, who operated the fireworks show, were arrested after the fireworks accidentally killed 19 people, including three members of Yang's own family and injured 50 people. Bodies of 13 people were discovered at the scene and six others died in hospital later.

The 60-year-old held the event just 30 meters away from his seven-story residence to celebrate the traditional Lantern Festival and the birth of a baby. His mother, brother and daughter-in-law were killed.

During the show, a burning firework dropped on the stockpile of fireworks and it detonated a deadly blast. The man's 1 million yuan ($146,481) home burned and eight luxury cars parked outside were damaged. Doors and windows within a 150m radius were blown out, a nearby house set alight and trees reduced to ashes in the inferno.

The man's family spent 100,000 yuan ($14,648) to stage the fireworks show this year.

A supermarket near the explosion reported property damage about 10,000 yuan ($1,464).

State broadcaster CCTV said some of the fireworks that triggered the explosion were highly dangerous and only meant to be handled by professionals.

The death toll rose to 21 by Sunday morning (28.2.), Guangdong emergency authorities said in a statement. Wednesday, March 3, the death toll has risen to 22, including five children, according to a latest online statement from the State Administration of Work Safety. Among the 48 injured in blast, seven were seriously wounded.

State media said authorities have so far identified 10 of the dead.

China has issued an urgent order to local authorities to strengthen safety measures after this deadly fireworks explosion during Chinese New Year.

Yichun City, Heilongjiang province/Northeast China.

The death toll from the explosion at a fireworks factory in the Wumahe District on August 16, 2010 (Monday), has climbed to 19, with five missing and another 153 injured, local authorities said Tuesday.

The casualties included employees of the fireworks factory as well as of a neighboring factory and local residents.

The explosion occurred at 9.45 a.m. It killed nine of the factory's 51 workers and injured 35, while five are still unaccounted for. Another eight were killed and 35 injured when the explosion hit the neighboring Taiye Wood Factory. The blast also killed two pedestrians and injured 83 residents near the factory.

As of 2 a.m. Tuesday, the fire had been largely extinguished but smoke still surrounds the area and 23 small fires are still burning within a 309-meter radius of the factory. The situation remains dangerous as new explosions may occur due to three timber mills near the fireworks factory. Shockwaves from the blast were felt five kilometres away from the factory. More than 2,000 people living in the area were evacuated after the explosion shattered windows within a kilometre radius.

More than 1,7000 firefighters and soldiers were dispatched in 62 fire trucks to fight the blaze and search for survivors.

Hundreds of firefighters were extinguishing the fire caused by the explosion. Rescuers are currently searching for survivors.

The blast destroyed most, if not all, of the factory.

Preliminary investigation shows the accident happened when workers moved stored wet fireworks to other places inside the factory.

The death toll has climbed to 20, with 153 injured and four missing, local authorities said on August 17, 2010. Preliminary investigations showed the factory continued production after operations had been suspended by the local government in June 2010, the vice-governor of Heilongjiang said on August 17, 2010. The factory also operated illegally by manufacturing large fireworks when it only had official prermission to produce small firecrackers, the vice-governor said. - 3 government officials and two executives have been sacked or detained over the fireworks factory explosion. All nine fireworks factories in Heilongjiang province in Northeast China were ordered shut August 19, 2010, days after a blast in Yichun City. The factories have been told to dismantle their production facilities by the end of August, according to a statement on the website of the Heilongjiang Work Safety Administration.

[à The awful explosion remembers two other very-deadly explosions: On May 13, 2000, 23 people were killed and nearly 950 others were injured when a massive fireworks explosion devastated a neighborhood in the Dutch city of Enschede. And on February 1, 20008, 22 people were killed and more than 100 others were injured when an unlicensed fireworks factory exploded in the Turkish capital of Istanbul.]

Yichun, Provinz Hilongjiang/Nordostchina.

Beijing/China: Chinese Lunar New Year

The old tradition of fireworks at Chinese New Year celebrations was back with a bang, as authorities lifted a 12-year ban on exploding fireworks during the Lunar New Year holiday. Beijing lifted the ban after a survey 2005 found that 70% of residents felt fireworks made the holiday period more festive.

About 4,000 fire-fighters and 3,000 police and community officers were placed on standby.

New rules allow Beijing residents to explode fireworks all day on Jan. 28 and 29 (2006), New Year's Eve and New Year's Day and from 7 a.m. to midnight every day from Jan. 30 to Feb. 12.

An estimated 3000 fireworks stands will be set up in the greater Beijing Area, 1000 of them in the city center.

Peking/China: Chinesisches Neujahrsfest

What was the cause? Investigators have concluded that the fireworks explosion was caused by three children who were playing with firecrackers at the gate of the storehouse. One of the kids threw a burning firecracker into the storehouse through a ventilation hole, directly detonating the firecrackers and fireworks stored inside.

à A former company executive received a suspended death sentence and nine other company and public officials will be jailed for three to five years for involvement in a fireworks explosion that killed 36 people. The Jan. 29 explosion in Linqi Town, Linzhou City in Henan Province, central China, was blamed on fireworks that were stored illegally and were ignited when a child threw a lighted firecracker into the cache. Most of those killed were at a temple celebrating the traditional Lunar New Year. Sixteen people died in the blast and 20 died later. Investigations showed that improper storage of the fireworks was largely to blame for the explosion.

Three children aged under 14 threw a burning firecracker through a ventilation intake into one of the company's firework storehouses. The blast set off a series of explosions in neighboring storehouses, which led to the heavy casualties. 12.12.2006

Jing'an village, Xiangfen County, North China's Shanxi Province. 25 people were killed and 9 injured in a fireworks factory explosion on January 11, 2005. The fireworks factory was operated inside a cave. A chain of blasts was sparked from one workshop to another, setting light to finished fireworks and inflammable raw materials kept in store in other caves. The main entrance of the factory was totally destroyed. The blast is being blamed on work safety violations although the factory does have a complete set of legitimate documents all required by different local authorities to permit production.

The families of the 25 victims can expect 150,000 yuan (US$18,000) in compensation. Most of the dead were local female villagers, with a few from neighbouring counties, who had very limited knowledge about inflammable products and were vulnerable to accidents. Another 200,000 yuan (US$24,000) has been allocated to the nine injured people. Founded in 1989, the fireworks factory employed 210 workers and produced 15,000 boxes of fireworks and 1,500 boxes of gun-salutes a year.

The Chinese government is planning to strengthen safety supervision over its scattered fireworks manufacturers to reduce the rising cases of accidental fireworks explosions.

From 1985 to 2003, a total of 8,448 explosions caused by fireworks took place across China, an average of 445 case per year.

Sun Huashan, deputy director of the State Administration for the Supervision of Production Safety, said China's fireworks industry is still in the process of regulation, which resulted in a weak safety supervision system in the whole industry. Most cases were caused by illegal manufacture or transportation or shoddy manufacture. The governement will encourage small-sized fireworks manufacturers to consolidate into larger ones, and will develop the provinces of Hunan and Jiangxi and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region into three major manufacturing bases of China's fireworks industry. At the start of the year there were a total of 7,064 fireworks companies in 26 Chinese provinces, 74% of which are located in Hunan, Jiangxi and Guangxi. The sales of fireworks in these places accounted for 83% of the national total.

Xinji City, Wangkou Township, north China's Hebei Province. 29 people were killed and more than 140 others injured in an explosion at Guoxi Fireworks on July 28, 2003.

The blast levelled the main production plant, collapsed half of a two-storey office building 100m away and burned cars and motorcycles nearby. State television said 91 people were still in hospital and another 50 had been treated for minor injuries and sent home.

August 2, 2003, three more bodies were found when police were cleaning up rubble and debris after 18 tons of leftover gunpowder in the devastated fireworks plant were ignited on August 1,2003.

A previous investigation found that the explosion was caused by the heat-induced ignition of gunpowder that was being dried under the sun.

Firework factories are to be closed down in China's impoverished eastern province of Jiangxi following a series of fatal explosions. About 200'000 people work in 9'000 firework factories in Jiangxi and will need to find new jobs.

The Hong Kong-based Information Centre for Human Rights in China said officials used the fireworks business to subsidise the education department’s income.

The ban will be phased in over 12 months. Traditonal firecrackers have been banned from many cities, including Beijing, because they are both dangerous and extremely noisy. Guangdong in south China has similar ban on firework production.

Beijing. Dense smoke from fireworks in Shenzhen's Bao'an District forced three passenger planes heading for the special economic zone to stay in the air longer than scheduled on February 7, 2001, the night of China's annual Lantern Festival. Local police and airport officials helped clear the fireworks area quickly after the fireworks fair finished, and the three planes then found their landing spots. Fireworks fair officials said they did not realize the smoke could block planes' landing.

Jiangmen City/south China's Guangdong Province. The death toll in the explosion of a 3,200 square-metre fireworks factory has risen to 36, leaving 160 people injured and more than 30 missing. There were more than 1,000 police and fire fighters and 16 fire trucks.

Investigators believe that the explosion was ignited by sparks produced by employees pounding iron nails inside the warehouse building.

The explosion blew off roofs, shattered windows and collapsed walls of buildings up to one kilometre away. Most of the injuries were caused by flying debris, local doctors said.

The Jiangmen municipal government has established seven special task forces to handle compensation to victims' families and other affairs in the aftermath. Initial compensations worth 500,000 yuan (US$60,240) have been sent to Jiangmen. 30.6.2000
