Tuusula. The Vaunukangas Elementary School has suffered such extensive damage in a fire that the building will be out of action to the end of May. The over 300 pupils have to be relocated in surrounding schools. The fire, which was discovered early in the evening, is thought likely to have been sparked by a firework, one of the many left over from New Year's celebrations that have been let off in the days since New Year's Eve. The costs of the blaze are likely to run to several million euros. 4.1.2009

Finland. Rescue Chief Kari Lehtokangas from the City of Helsinki Rescue Department intends to restrict the setting-off of fireworks on New Year's Eve and overnight. It is planned that the use of fireworks would be forbidden in downtown market squares as well as in the immediate vicinity of certain shopping malls. One of the reasons for the ban on fireworks is the aim to improve security. At the same time, attempts are made to prevent damage to buildings and other property. In addition, Helsinki officials would like to decrease the amount of noise and smoke from fireworks, as well as the rubbish left behind.

2004

Traditional New Year's fireworks caused eye injuries to twelve people in the Helsinki region. Four of the injuries were serious, and three patients were operated on during the night between New Year's Eve and January 1st. According to Tero Kivelä, head physician of the Helsinki University eye clinic, the elevated number of injuries is related to the amount of fireworks that were set off this year. Moreover, some injuries are caused as onlookers do not have any eye protection.

Compared with previous years, the number of eye injuries caused by New Year's fireworks increased this year. Most of those injured were onlookers, rather than the individuals setting off the rockets and other fireworks.
