Belfast/Northern Ireland. Postal staff escaped injury after a packet containing a firework exploded in a mail sorting office. The complex at Royal Mail House in Tomb Street was evacuated after the blast sparked a security alert at around 11 a.m. Army bomb experts and emergency services were called to the scene to inspect the premises of the National Returns Centre. 14.1.2011

Dublin. A young dog has become one of the early victims of Halloween savagery, after its jaw was blown off when thugs apparently stuck a lit firework into its mouth. Gardai are now trying to track down a group of youths behind the horrific incident which happened on Cardiffsbridge Road in Finglas. The female terrier lost the entire bottom of its jaw and a huge amount of blood. The Dublin SPCA says it was impossible to repair the injuries and there was no choice but to put the dog down. 15.9.2010

Belfast/Northern Ireland. Fireworks have been thrown in clashes between football fans and the police after a World Cup qualifier at Windsor Park. Fireworks, bricks and bottles were thrown between the two sets of fans outside the football ground. 28.3.2009

Dundalk. A boy (10) received serious injuries when he was hit by debris sent flying by a firework.

A group of 12/13-year-olds were at a vacant house across the boys home, placing fireworks in the pillers of the driveway, and letting them off. They were putting the fireworks in the walls of the pillers to blow them up, and pieces were flying all over the place. They let one firework off, and it hit the boy in the mouth. 7.10.2009

Coalisland, County Tyrone/Northern Ireland. A barrage of fireworks was thrown at homes and gardens at Inismore Gardens. Disaster was narrowly averted when a firework exploded on top of a propane gas cylinder. Fortunately the cylinder failed to ignite. 10.10.2009

Fintona, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. A woman escaped with just minor injuries after a firework was thrown into her car on Main Street. Acting on instinct, the woman managed to exit the vehicle before the firework exploded, potentially saving herself from considerable harm. 14.10.2009

Lifford, County Donegal. A boy (13) sustained horrific hand injuries and may have to have three fingers amputated after a firework he lifted exploded in his hand. "Somebody fired a firework at him in the locality and he went to throw it away when it exploded in his hand", told his father.

Kells. A garda was injured by an exploding firework following a night of Halloween violence at the weekend. The incident involving the female garda took the Headfort Grove area when she suffered an eye injury when a firework exploded on a patrol car windscreen. A crowd had gathered around the patrol car and were being verbally abusive when somebody threw a banger over the heads of the crowd at the windscreen. The banger got stuck in a wiper and exploded showering the occupants of the car with glass, some of which hit the injured garda's eye. 31.10.2009

Dingle. Police have warned of the dangers of fireworks after a group of youngsters were filmed using a firework to shoot balls of flame at each other. The children lit Roman candles and used them to shoot the flames near a sports centre in Park Road. In the footage, filmed on a mobile phone, a fireball hit one of the children in the back.

Dublin. A young swan has had to be put down by a vet after his beak was blown off and its tongue was shredded when a firework deliberately inserted into bread given to him at the Stardust Memorial Park, Coolock, exploded. 22.9.2008

Ballymoney. A teenager (18) has been arrested in relation to an incident involving a firework at a house in Robinson Avenue, in the early hours of October 18, 2008. According to police, a firework was put through the letter box of the house.

Dromore, County Down/Northern Ireland. Surgeons are hoping to save what's left of a 10-year-old boy's hand after an incident in which an illegal home-made firework he was holding exploded, also injuring his chest. The boy lost four fingers on his right hand and underwent five hours of surgery in an effort to save his thumb. - Banbridge UUP councillor said the device was in effect a homemade grenade made out of various fireworks and bangers. 25.10.2008

Arklow . A pet cat is recovering at a veterinary surgery this week following a horrendous and cruel attack with a firecracker which is thought to have been placed in its ear. The distressed animal underwent surgery at the end of last week after it was found in a near-death state to the rear of a pub in the town.

An emergency call was made to Avondale Veterinary Hospital after customers in The Old Ship heard a bang and saw a cat which was in shock and they saw by closer inspection that its head has been severely injured by a Hallowe'en banger. During the course of almost three hours of surgery the animal's broken jaw was wired, damaged tissue removed from its ear and a surgical drain attached. It is predicted that the female cat will recover to a certain extent but will most likely be deaf. 29.10.2008

Village of Athea, Co Limerick. Gardai in Co Limerick are investigating an attack on a man (72) on Halloween night. The man was kicked in the head several times, resulting in broken teeth and a broken nose, by a gang of youths after he tried to confront them about throwing firecrackers under cars. 31.10.2008

County Antrim Shield final at Windsor Park, Linfield – Cliftonville: Conor Hagan (26), a Linfield football player was hit by a firework launched by Cliftonville fans moments after the whistle was blown at the end of a cup final match. Hagan was struck by a live firework which exploded mere moments after bouncing of his back. He was fortunate to escape serious injury. 4.11.2008

Belfast. Police say they received a report that a group of youths had thrown fireworks at a terrified cow at Divis Close in the north-west of the city between 7.30 and 8pm on August 26.

Gardai in Bundoran are investigating an incident whereby a firework was thrown through an open front window into an elderly man's home at Mountain View in the West End in the town at 6.30pm. Smoke damage was caused. 10.10.2006 .

West Belfast (Gransha Park in the Ballymurphy area). An elderly couple escaped serious injury after two fireworks were posted through the letterbox of their house. But Paddy (75) and Maureen Magee (66) suffered smoke inhalation and shock after the attack. The alarm was raised when the couples house filled with smoke after the two fireworks landed in their hallway shortly before around 8.30 p.m.

Mrs Magee said they were targeted for "constant stone-throwing and harassment" but on this day their garden had "nearly went on fire with fireworks".

As police attended the incident they came under attack from a group throwing a petrol bomb, fireworks and other missiles. 24.9.2005

Londonderry. A car was set alight by a gang of 50 youths near the Old School Lane and Ardnamoyle Park. When a fire crew left their vehicle to put out the blaze, a firework was thrown into the middle of them. Eight hours later, one firefighter continued to suffer from continuous ringing in his ears. Northern Ireland. 86 people were injured by firework over the Halloween period between 11 Oct. and 12 Nov. 2005 in Northern Ireland (an increase of more than 50%). Nearly ¾ (60 of the 86) of those injured were under 20. 90% of them were male. 38 persons were injured over the Halloween period of the year 2002, a decrease of 98 (72%) from the 2001 figure. 

68% of persons injured over the Halloween period attended an Accident and Emergency Department or Minor Injuries Unit between 30 October and 3 November 2002. 

Almost 74% of those injured were male. 

Almost 74% of those injured were aged under 20. 

There were no fatalities. 

The most common sites of injury were to the face, head or neck area (32% of all injuries) and the wrist or hand (30%). 

42% of those injured required no further treatment, 18% were referred to their GP and almost 13% were asked to revisit the Accident and Emergency Department at a later date. Six persons were admitted to hospital or transferred to another hospital.

Fireworks which have been used as deadly crude bombs during rioting in north and west Belfast may be banned by the government. Northern Ireland Security Minister Jane Kennedy announced on Friday that she is starting a review into the problems associated with the misuse of fireworks in the province. An outright ban on the public sale of fireworks in Northern Ireland will be one of the ideas under consideration. The ban on the sale of fireworks in the province was lifted only recently.
