2006

Toronto (parking lot of a strip mall at Kingston and Markham Rds.). Fireworks were being sold from the back of a rental truck for Victoria Day celebrations, when a blaze broke out, quickly reducing the truck to a smoldering heap. The explosion scattered debris as far as 40 metres away.

The fire broke out, when a group of teenagers, ranging in age from 14 to 19, requested to buy some fireworks. When they were refused because they didn't look of age, one of the youths pitched a firecracker into the truck - despite the fact five sellers were still in the back of the truck - which exploded as it landed squarely in a box of Roman Candles. In a chain reaction other cases of fireworks were ignited. The group grabbed some boxes of fireworks and ran away.

A female seller and her eight-month-old baby were inside the truck when the pyrotechnics burst into flames. Both suffered smoke inhalation and the woman was treated for third-degree burns to one arm. The four male vendors suffered minor burns.

Damage of the truck and contents: about $50,000.

Four youths and two adults have been charged with arson, robbery, endangering human life and possession of property obtained by crime offences. More arrests are expected. 22.5.2006

"Firefighter suing fireworks company", 3.8.1999, http://www.fortsaskinfo.com/thepost/issues/4-30/story2.htm : James Clark (39), a local firefighter, who lost his left hand and right index finger and thumb in an explosion while setting off Fort Saskatchewan's Canada Day fireworks show July 1, 1997, has started a $3.25 million lawsuit against a fireworks manufacturer saying that the manufacturer of the fireworks did not provide proper instructions in English. The roman candle was fired upside down because the firefighters did not know exactly what it was, exploded, blasting its contents into the gound and back against Clark. Wearing helmet, face mask, gloves and safety jacket was not enough to prevent injury.
