At least 200 workers of the Rescue 1122, fire brigade, WAPDA, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, police, Edhi ambulance service and other departments continued their rescue efforts throughout the day but the fire had engulfed around 10 plazas and dozens of houses and as many as 300 shops caught fire shops in its range leaving hundreds of residents homeless and shopkeepers without their shops.

Karachi, Gharibabad area. At least four persons were killed and at least 26 others, including women and children, injured when a powerful blast rocked an illegal firecracker factory, which was being run in  a residential building of Liaquatabad Town. Three of the four dead – a 45-year-old woman and two men (25 and 35) - were identified; the body of the fourth person remained unknown.

The firecracker factory house collapsed completely, five houses were damaged and 15 others were affected in the blast. The occupants of the houses were trapped under the debris. Residents of the area personally started the rescue operation by throwing water and mud on the fire. No heavy machinery (for removing debris) could enter the area due to the small lanes. Fire tenders could not enter either, and the firefighters had to stretch the water pipes to extinguish the resulting blaze.

Due to a short circuit, the electric supply company cut the electricity connection of the area. According to the sources, a gas pipeline passing through the area also exploded after the blast which made the matter worse. - It should be mentioned that the local people gave complaints to police regarding the presence of a firecrackers factory in a densely populated area; however, no action was taken against the responsible. 26.6.2009

"Fireworks explosion", 2.6.2001, http://www.dawn.com/2001/06/02/ed.htm: The intensity of the blast can be judged from the fact that besides the dead, many others were injured, some of them critically. While the precise cause of the occurrence is still unclear, it is likely that the burning of combustible material stored in the factory may have set off the explosion. Disregard of the elementary standards of storage and safety of explosive material seems to be an obvious explanation. à … In no case should such factories be allowed to operate in congested areas in the future.

"Eight die in Lahore factory explosion", 1.6.2001, http://www.dawn.com/2001/06/02/top6.htm: Hundreds of residents gathered in a ground at some distance from the scene. Because of a blanket of dust and smoke everything in a radius of several hundred meters remained out of sight for about half an hour. A majority of the residents said they were ignorant about the existence of a fireworks factory in their neighbourhood.
