Russia. At least 67 people have been killed and 144 injured during Russia's New Year's festivities when Russians celebrate with firecrackers and 'cold' fireworks.

"In the past 24 hours, a total of 589 fires have occurred in Russia, including 479 fires in residential buildings," Russia's state-run news agency RIA Novosti quoted an anonymous emergency ministry official as saying on January 1, 2010. Most of the blazes happen when people build indoor fires with so-called cold incendiary materials meant for open space displays of fireworks.

Perm/Friday, December 4, 2009:

The blaze began at 11.15p.m. when a stray firework during a stage show pyrotechnics display set off inside the Lame Horse nightclub lit the ceiling and walls, which were decorated with twigs and lined with a flammable material. A stampede ensued as people rushed towards the one narrow doorway exit.

More than 200 people were in the nightclub at the time; most of them the club's employees and their relatives, attending a banquet celebrating the club's eighth anniversary.

At least 100 people were killed and about 131 others injured. Most victims are said to have died from smoke inhalation, severe burns and during the ensuing crush as people fought to escape. Most of the victims were young people. Health Minister Tatyana Golikova told that of those 131 injured 88 were in critical condition, including 59 on artificial lung ventilation. The death toll could rise.

A government commission to deal with the incident, was formed. Law enforcement said the fire was caused by violating instructions on handling fireworks. The Prosecutor General's main detective unit said it had opened a criminal case over suspected breaches of safety regulations at the club.

Four people, including the club's co-owner, were charged on Monday (7.12.) over the blaze and are in police custody. Alexander Titlyanov, the nightclub's founder, succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire. He had been a suspect in the criminal case opened into the blaze.

The death toll has been steadily rising throughout the weeks, reaching 152 by December 25, 2009, with 74 injured still in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other city's hospitals, of which 20 in grave condition. Medics still say the number of fatalities could rise.

Following the incident, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev declared December 7 an official day of mourning in Russia. Three days of mourning will be observed in Perm.

"It was wrong to use any kind of fireworks in a building with a flammable ceiling made of wood and plastic," the vice-president of the Russian Pyrotechnics Association told RT (a Russian newspaper).

Russia's emergency services chief has called for a ban on using fireworks at public events.

The death toll rises to 155 on January 4,2010. 58 people still remain in hospital.

Perm, 4. Dezember 2009:
