2009

Bangkok. In the first half hour of the New Year, a fire raced through the two-storey Santika nightclub in the entertainment district Ekkamai, killing at least 61 people and injuring more than 200. (The Phranakorn Centre, an official agency dealing with accidents in Bangkok, said at least 61 people died and that 35 foreigners were among the injured. - The Narenthorn Emergency Centre, which was co-ordinating relief efforts, said more than 200 had been injured.)

More than 1000 people were allowed into the building, which has a capacity for only 500 people.

Victims died from burns, smoke inhalation and injuries during a stampede to escape from the club, which had only one door for the public. Firefighters said a door at the rear was known only to the stuff.

Police believe the fire may have been caused by firecrackers brought into the Santika Club by guests or by sparks flying from a New Year's countdown display on the nightclub stage.

The Web site of The Nation newspaper quoted one party-goer as saying the blaze was caused by fireworks that ignited the second floor ceiling, which was made largely of sound-proofing material.

January 1, 2009, Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva visited the site, expressing concern about the use of fireworks or party sparklers inside. "The problem was that firecrackers were allowed to be brought inside (the nightclub), that is the issue about which we have to be more cautious and it has to be controlled more strictly," he told reporters.

The blaze had completely gutted the building. Rescue teams used pick-up trucks to ferry the corpses from the scene. 1.1.2009

Mr. Sarawut was charged with negligence causing death, serious injuries and damage to property with a possible maximum punishment of 10 years imprisonment. Mr. Sarawut had denied all charges, saying he will fight the case in court. Five others, all owners and managers of the club, have been charged with causing death by negligence and admitting minors.

"DSI to take over Santika fire case", 2.2.2009, http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews/136147/dsi-to-take-over-santika-fire-case: According to a minister, police's investigation attributed the fire to Saravuth Ariya (28), the lead vocalist of the Burn rock band (the band who played in the Santika-club in that night), who was accused of using a lighter to ignite a firework and thus causing the blaze. Justice Ministry's investigators found a surveillance camera recording at the crime scene that completely rules out the charge. In the recording, the singer had not lit any firework but had left the stage before the fire broke out. The tape shows fireworks in the pub had been ignited with an electronic device, not a lighter.

Bangkok.

DOH-Center for Health Development in Western Visayas is aggressively campaigning this year against the use of firecrackers to prevent the loss of lives and limbs of people in the height of celebrating Christmas Day and New Year. The advisory against the use of watusi and other firecrackers is contained in a Briefer on Fourmula Kontra Paputok released by DOH 6 for holiday merrymakers to "stay alive and complete for the coming year". According to the briefer, watusi poisoning is a condition due to ingestion of watusi. Watusi is made up of extremely poisonous and toxic chemicals. – DOH hopefully expects that by 2010, use of firecrackers and pyrotechnics shall be totally eliminated.
