Istanbul. Explosions in an illegal fireworks factory in a five-storey trade building in the Davutpasa district killed at least 20 people and injured up to 117 others. The number of victims is likely to rise as several people may still be under the rubble.

The first explosion started a fire leading to a second bigger explosion some minutes after. Eight of the dead where bystanders watching the first fire from a nearby parking lot and were killed in the second explosion.

The blasts caused part of the building to collapse. Nearby buildings were also damaged in the blast. Windows within a radius of several hundred meters were shattered. Large chunks of concrete smashed cars parked below and rubble and dust littered the street.

Davutpasa's industrial development in recent years has resulted in factories being located close to homes.

Istanbul's Governor Mammer Güler stated that the third and fourth floors of the trade building had been used as an illegal fireworks factory and/or depot. According to Güler, the explosion took place in the fireworks area. The fire then spread to the furnace of a textile and paint manufacturer elsewhere in the building. There were more than 130 workshops and offices in the building complex where the blast occurred.

The mayor of the Zeytinburnu municipality where the explosion site is located said that the municipality had no information about there being a fireworks factory or depot in the building. The accident has been condemned by trade unions and the Labout Party who called the explosion a "work murder". 31.1.2008

The 24-year-old man was passing by when the accident occurred. 23 died and 117 were injured in the aftermath of the accident.

"Fireworks cause of explosion", 1.2.2008, http://www.turkishdailynews.com.tr/article.php?enewsid=95283: The cause of the explosion is definitely due to "fireworks, sparklers and flares", said the Governor of Istanbul, Mammer Güler.

Istanbul.
